Staff Training: Get Your Game On presentation

Indiana Cooperative Library Services Authority (IN)

Indiana Cooperative Library Services Authority (INCOSLA) is astatewide network providing leadership in cooperative activities for Indiana libraries.

Running the Program

This session, one of many full-day workshops for adult learners on videogaming at the library, demonstrates how videogaming has become both ubiquitous and crucial. It explains why videogames matter to all libraries in terms of entertainment, culture, learning, literacy, and youth development.

At the end of the session, participants will have learned to:

  • Articulate how videogames meet development needs of teens, and build developmental assets of adolescents
  • Examine videogame collection development policies, procedures and issues
  • Discover best gaming program practices in the US and Canada
  • Experience a variety of games on the three major platforms as well as online
  • Design a new program of service to appeal to the “gamer” generation

The session includes an icebreaker, where participants talk about the kinds of games they play; opportunities for hand held gaming in the morning and console gaming in the afternoon; a quiz on videogame industry statistics, a short overview of game design; the benefits of playing videogames; and model programs, collections, and services.

Facility

The ideal space for training includes tables and chairs to facilitate group work and notetaking, and a room with wall outlets for console gaming. The hands-on console gaming is a chance to model a videogame night, and demonstrate the ease of hooking up the equipment.

Marketing

In this case, the session was advertised on the presenter's website and the host's website; attendance was voluntary.
